Missions
The Wittockiana is the museum of book arts and bookbinding. The institution boasts a unique collection of bookbinding decorations, reflecting the evolution of styles over five centuries, from the Renaissance to contemporary creations. In addition to this prestigious collection built up by the industrialist and bibliophile Michel Wittock, the museum also presents a number of other remarkable items, including the cabinet of the poet Valère-Gille, grandfather of the founder of the Wittockiana and last director of the Jeune Belgique, the Lucien Bonaparte collection (books, letters, photographs), as well as numerous books by contemporary artists, book objects and sculptures. Finally, the Wittockiana houses a unique collection of some 500 precious rattles, an astonishing and unusual collection that comes from all over the world and spans forty centuries of history. Temporary exhibitions on the themes of bookbinding, books and collections are held here every year, as are study days and one-off cultural events (recitals, writing workshops, lectures, etc.). A bookbinding workshop offering daily classes and an educational programme for (extra)school groups complete the picture.
