La Rue as a non-profit organization was founded in 1978 by a group of residents of Molenbeek, to offer Molenbeek residents and workers, faced with situations of marginalization and contempt, means, places and dynamics, learning about democracy , social and political expressions, to encourage them to “take charge of themselves”. She has chosen, through local work in the popular neighborhoods of Molenbeek, to inform, to promote reflection, participation and the personal involvement of residents in questions of development, town planning and to build with them, using existing resources, educational and schooling projects linked to daily life. An association for continuing education and integrated local development, it aims to promote responsibility and active participation in social, economic, cultural and political life in Old Molenbeek. It thus develops various actions and activities aimed at children, young people and adults, such as: homework school, creative workshop, literacy courses and cultural activities, various services, housing actions, living environment and social cohesion, support for citizen initiatives, support for the management of a collective vegetable garden, awareness of sustainable development, questions of the right to the city and a city in transition, etc.

The association aims to support the gathering of groups and people who believe that everyone has the right to be informed, to train, to express themselves, to organize and to act permanently on the problems posed. through his daily life.
The association works to provide means of information, training and exercise of control and direct responsibility over decisions concerning the needs of workers, users and residents.
Thus, the association can create, organize, coordinate, support, any approach pursuing the following objectives:
- Social action aimed at improving the living conditions of residents, particularly Old Molenbeek;
- Cultural action, particularly in Old Molenbeek, both by reactivating existing activities and by creating new ones. The impact of this growth could be local, municipal, regional, national or international, depending on the activity;
