Transparency International EU is part of the global anti-corruption movement, Transparency International, which includes over 100 chapters around the world. Since 2008, Transparency International EU has functioned as a regional liaison office for the global movement and as such it works closely with the Transparency International Secretariat in Berlin, Germany.

Transparency International EU’s mission is to prevent corruption and promote integrity, transparency and accountability in EU institutions, policies and legislation.

As Transparency International’s regional liaison office to the European Union, Transparency International EU leads the movement’s EU advocacy. We cooperate closely with national chapters worldwide, particularly with Transparency International’s 22 national chapters and two national contact points in EU Member States.

We want to make decision-making in the EU as transparent as possible, so that politicians, civil servants and lobbyists could be held accountable for their actions. We also want to ensure that the EU spends its money transparently.

We want to make sure that the vast sums of money that flow around the EU are sourced from legitimate means and have legitimate ends.

The Rule of Law & Civic Space

We focus on the EU’s attempts to faciliate anti-corruption efforts of governments in Member States and non-EU countries.

Corruption is a major challenge in the EU. It ruins lives and undermines the rule of law and the democratic process. It prevents the full exercise of basic human rights by denying citizens their right to fair and democratic political and economic process. Corruption and fraud is estimated to cost the EU €120 billion per year.

Transparency International EU has been at the forefront of promoting transparency, accountability and integrity in the EU since our office was set up in 2008. We actively campaign for EU laws that can prevent corruption, such as reforms to EU anti-money laundering legislation or introduction of corporate public country-by-country reporting, and strive to ensure that the EU institutions are accountable to the wider public for the decisions they make.
